If there is one season that can bring a smile to your face, it has to be summer with long, breezy days that make us beam with joy. Summer in Corfu tends to have that effect on people and holidays bring with them unhurried mornings, restful afternoons, and leisurely evenings. As one Tibetan scholar put it, “there are times to cultivate and create, when you nurture your world and give birth to new ideas and ventures.” A relaxing summer vacation, away from the stresses and routines of daily life, is the perfect medium for reflection that allows each of us to see more clearly where we are going and what we need to change.
All the pundits are forecasting a drop in tourism this year and that is understandable given the world economy at present. While you have
been away from Roda however, in the face of gloomy forecasts, local people have been steaming ahead with their

restaurants have open-ed several days before the first pack-age tour visitors arrive.
Well, today is the day that all this changes and, by tonight, we will see the first of this year’s tourists in Roda. It seems that, in spite of growing pressures on finances, visitors from northern Europe are still determined to visit sunnier climes this summer. Lying on the beach or listening to the gentle rhythm of waves on the seashore, enjoying a cooling drink in the shade or a dip in a pool, simply taking stock of life and its meaning is by no means a waste of time but an absolute necessity – even more so with current pressures. A summer of new beginnings has started.

Café bars and children’s fun centres like ‘Nemo’, ‘Tropicana Island’ & ‘Oscars’ have all had extensive refurbishment, restaurants like ‘Opa’ & ‘Maggies’ have brightened up their premises and introduced new ideas, the ‘Rainbow’ shop has moved next to the extended ‘GP Family’ supermarket, ‘Vassia’ has re-opened its old shop by Niko’s Taverna with a new range of products and the’ X-treme’ accessories shop has changed hands and had an extensive refit. In addition, ‘Panorama’ has a new frontage, there is ‘Estrella’, a new pizza restaurant across the road and ‘Angels Cake’, a cake shop with a difference. Then there is the ‘Coral Hotel’ who, for the second year running, has completed a thorough rebuild and stylish upgrade. Floors
